TSE authorizes referendum for municipalities of Lagunillas and San Ignacio de Velasco

The municipalities of Lagunillas and San Ignacio de Velasco will go to a referendum on September 4communicated the member Dina Chuquimia, who explained that in the first case it is about the conversion of the municipality to native indigenous peasant autonomy; while the second will go for the approval of its Organic Charter.

“In the case of the latter municipality, the question says: Do you agree with the approval and entry into force of the Organic Charter of the Autonomous Municipal Government of San Ignacio de Velasco? That is the question that will go on the ballot on the day of the referendum and citizens will have the option of vote if you agree or not, “explained the member.

The two municipalities began their process before the Departmental Electoral Court (TDE) of Santa Cruz and then before the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), they also had to go to the Plurinational Constitutional Court (TCP) to review the question. This whole process took six years. they started in 2016 to go to the polls.

According to the explanation of the vowel the two municipalities will bear the expenses that this referendum implies and now with the endorsement of the TCP they will be able to start the whole process with the supervision of the TDE of Santa Cruz.

In the case of the municipality of Lagunillas, the approved question is: Do you agree that the municipality of Lagunillas converts to rural native indigenous autonomy, in accordance with the scope, precepts and procedures established in the Political Constitution of the State and the law? Chuquimia explained that it will be the citizens who approve or reject the proposal.

The authorities they did not quantify the cost of the popular consultationbut they clarified that they must come out of the local coffers since it was their authorities that requested the holding of these referendums.

In 2015 there were six municipalities and three indigenous territories who sought to become indigenous autonomies and began work to achieve that end. The Guarani who live in the municipalities of Gutiérrez and Lagunillas, in Santa Cruz; and Macharetí in Chuquisaca. The indigenous people of Chaqui, in Potosí; of Andamarca and Corque, in Oruro; and the inhabitants of Monte Verde, in Santa Cruz; Yura in Potosi; and Camata in La Paz.
