Truckers close the border with Costa Rica before the veto of Law 808

The border between Panama and Costa Rica is totally paralyzed after cargo transport truckers from the unitary sector proceeded to place their vehicles and paralyze entry and exit activities, annoyed according to them by the veto that the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo , gave Law number 808, which established the freezing of fuel prices in the country.

The truckers also closed the road leading to Gualaca and were removed from the road by riot police, who used tear gas to clear the road.

The cargo carriers of the Unitary Sector affirmed that in the previous protest they had made, they asked the Executive Branch and the National Government that they wanted this Law to be applied in the national territory and would have given a term to allow the president to determine whether to sanction or vetoed said Law for them to adopt their actions.

According to the protesters, this strike will be indefinite and they seek the president to rectify his decision, since Law 808 was approved unanimously in the National Assembly, for which they consider it an error that it was vetoed by Cortizo when it is a measure awaited by all the people.

After the veto of this Law, deputy Zulay Rodríguez, promoter of the initiative, said that this Law cannot be approved in the Assembly due to insistence, since at this time the Assembly is in recess until July 1.

They mentioned that the subsidy of 80 dollars a month, granted by the State, is very low for what they consume weekly, emphasizing that a trip to Central America ranges between 2,000 and 3,000 dollars and David’s trip to Panama costs around a thousand Dollars.

It is worth mentioning that last Friday, June 3, there was another increase in the price of fuel and it is expected that the next price announcement will be an increase, a situation that is unsustainable for carriers.

They hope to have answers in this regard in order to reach an agreement with the Executive.
