#GuestColumn | Can anything be learned from these elections?

However, Morena continues to win in the states, even though the opposition proclaims week after week the drop in the president’s popularity. If López Obrador does not have the expected electoral muscle, things must be discussed honestly: the icing wave continues to gain ground thanks to the failure of previous governments to solve problems such as corruption, insecurity and inequality. This will continue to happen as long as there are political people related to these scandals, or continue without self-criticism.

Third place: if Morena advances with state leadership, and the PAN retains strongholds even with the daily attacks of the president, it is to be expected that the party system will be reconfigured from the local level. Under this perspective, we can read the elections from 2018 to 2002 under two narratives.

The first is actually fanciful: the fight to put an end to the cherries through the union of the opposition. Yes, it may help explain the victory in Durango and some regions such as half of Mexico City, part of the metropolitan area and some cities, but in the end it is a nice wish to assume that this will give them a high growth ceiling. at the federal level heading to 2024.

On the other hand, the second narrative sounds more consistent: the opposition maintains strongholds not so much because of its visceral opposition against the president and his party, but because simply and simply it has known how to do things well. We are talking about an acceptably responsible and effective government, a solid narrative about what unites the entity, what is its collective project and where are they going with continuity. People who have been able to communicate these ideas of identity, preferably in a more fresh and authentic way, have also been decisive for these triumphs: Maru Campos, Teresa Jiménez and Mauricio Kuri.

Under this premise, Morena can weave a discourse, structures and leadership of its own and different from the president if it knows how to see decentralization as an opportunity to create a solid party, with the possibility of surviving the caudillo. They will have that window of opportunity as long as the opposing parties continue to not understand what happened to them in 2018.
