The situation is not foreign to other Mexicans. The complementary indicators of the National Survey on Consumer Confidence (ENCO) for May reflect low and declining levels compared to the same month last year, for the purchase of housing and cars, at least in the next two years.
To the question “are you or any member of this household planning to buy, build or remodel a house in the next two years?”, the index was 16 points, out of a level of 100, and was 0.1 lower than the same month of last year. This would be the second consecutive month that this index reports a decline.
When these indices are below 50 points, they show a pessimistic scenario. When they are above 50 points we are in an optimistic scenario, although these indicators have remained below 50 points, variability is observed that indicates greater pessimism, explains Luis Adrián Muñiz, deputy director of Analysis at Vector Casa de Bolsa.

Meanwhile, the index to the question “Are you or any member of this household planning to buy a car, new or used, in the next two years?” It was 10.5 points, the lowest since last January, and which represents a decrease of 1.5 points, compared to May 2021.
“We have a context in which we have just emerged from a pandemic, people have just found a job, or do not have one, when these situations happen, you give priority to solving the most immediate expenses, such as food, which are perishable goods, you think about buying a car or a house when you have your most basic needs met,” says Muñiz.

Similarly, the relative component to make purchases of durable goods, such as furniture, television, washing machine and other household appliances contracted 0.9 points compared to last year, indicated the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).
