The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) forecasts that winter 2022, which will begin on June 21, “will be colder than normal”, with a higher incidence in the central and southern highlands.
Gabriela Rosas, deputy director of weather forecasting at Senamhi, the low temperatures registered by the context of the weak La Niña, has generated that the air temperatures in Metropolitan Lima and Callao get below 10 degrees, and to be still autumn, the levels are relatively low.
“These days figures between 14 to 15 degrees will be recorded, low levels of temperature in the sea in the month of August, which will give sensations of cold. Even though the phenomenon of El Niño related to intense rains, mainly in the north, is better known, in the case of La Niña it is the opposite, ”he said in an interview with Radio Nacional.
The specialist stated that this is the third year with quite cold temperatures and sea levelsthe same ones that are reflected in the low temperatures in cities near the coast.
Frost and cold
The frost they refer to events with excessive temperature drop, which occur in high Andean areas with values below 0° and in the case of cold weather it occurs in jungle areas, said the Senamhi representative.
“We are going through our eighth cold season and in the case of frosts, a warning has been issued in the central and southern mountains where it will be in force from today until Wednesday, June 8. Areas such as Arequipa, Tacan and Sierra de Puno can reach below 20°”, said Rosas.
