Two billboards in Los Angeles denounce serious human rights situation in Cuba

Valla, Los Ángeles, Cuba

MIAMI, United States. — The city of Los Angeles, site of the IX Summit of the Americas, displays two billboards denouncing human rights violations in Cuba.

It is an initiative of the Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights (Race and Equality) which seeks to exhort the international community that will attend the Summit to adopt measures to put an end to the repression, cases of harassment, arbitrary arrests and attacks constantly suffered by activists, independent journalists, artists and defenders of human rights on the island.

The posters are located on a street in the city center (216 East 4th St, CA 90013) and another near the Los Angeles International Airport (Venice Blvd, CA 90034).

The billboards display images of the protests on July 11 and 12, 2021 (J11) in Cuba. Likewise, they reveal that there are still more than 700 detained demonstrators —the majority without being prosecuted— for demanding changes on the Island and for exercising their right to freedom of expression.

The posters reproduce in Spanish and English the phrase “We were so hungry that we even ate our fear”, one of the most heard during the 11J demonstrations.

The billboards will be maintained throughout the Summit of the Americas, which will be held from today until next Friday, June 10.

Parallel to the Summit, the event will be held this Tuesday in the Californian city Peaceful demonstrations in Latin America: Reflections on Cuba one year after 11Jwhile on Wednesday, June 8, the Latin American Human Rights Consortium will hold the event Prisoners for what?: People imprisoned for political reasons in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

In both spaces, international experts who have closely followed what is happening in Cuba, as well as human rights defenders, will participate.
