Andrés Manuel López Obrador believes that the White House’s decision to exclude countries from the Summit of the Americas is part of a policy of interventionism
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this Monday, June 6 – the day the Summit of the Americas officially begins – that he will not be present at the hemispheric event. He had already said on several occasions that he would not attend the meeting in Los Angeles if the White House confirmed the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the meeting.
And so it happened. On Sunday, June 5, the decision was made in the government of President Joe Biden not to invite Caracas, Managua and Havana to the Summit of the Americas; although with Cuba the shadow of doubt was still present. the news agency Bloomberg confirmed the exclusion after weeks of discussions with the countries.
For this reason, López Obrador took advantage of his daily press conference to say that his foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrad, will go in his place.

“I am not going to attend the Summit, Marcelo Ebrard is going on my behalf, on behalf of the Government of Mexico. I am not going because not all the countries of America are invited and I believe in the need to change the policy that has been imposed for centuries, exclusion, “said López Obrador.

He believes that there can be no Summit of the Americas if there is not full participation by all countries. In his opinion, this is continuing with “interventionism” and is a “lack of respect” for the people.
He also blamed Democratic Senator Bob Menéndez and the leaders of the Cuban community in the US for being “responsible” for the failure of this hemispheric meeting.

López Obrador said that he greatly respects US President Joe Biden, but there is a lot of pressure from the Republicans and election times are coming in the United States. He announced that July will go to the White House to see his American counterpart to discuss the issue of the integration of all America.
Despite his refusal to go to Los Angeles, the Mexican president has said that his relations with the United States are good and respectful.
