The independent electoral observatory Urnas Abiertas reported this Friday, June 3, that it will participate in the IX Summit of the Americas, which will take place between June 6 and 10.
The representatives of the organization will also participate in the IX Conference of Social Sciences promoted by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (Clacso) to be held in Mexico City between Tuesday 7 and Friday 10 of this month.

According to the observatory’s statement, representatives of Open Ballot Boxes will be in both spaces and “will have the opportunity to participate as exhibitors and transmit about the human rights violations that Nicaragua is experiencing and the deterioration of democracy in the country.”
Ligia Gomez, spokesperson and researcher for Urnas Abiertas and part of the delegation that will be at the Summit, will address the presentation “Nicaragua: Extermination of Democracy” that will take place on Tuesday, June 7, at 12 noon in Los Angeles, California, a event promoted by civil society organizations.
“In his speech, Gómez will review the deterioration of democracy in Nicaragua and how Daniel Ortega has used the powers of the State as arms of his repressive and authoritarian strategy in the country,” the organization highlights.
Participation of Open Ballot Boxes in Clacso 2022
As for the Conference on Social Sciences promoted by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (Clacso), Urnas Abierta will also expose the situation of human rights and “the decline of democracy in Nicaragua”, where it will participate Olga Valley, director of the observatory.

“In his presentation, Valle will address the path that allowed the consolidation of the dictatorial regime in Nicaragua, as well as the past and present manifestations of authoritarianism and totalitarian control,” the statement added.
The panel will take place on Wednesday, June 8, from 4:00 to 6:00pm; in the auditorium of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Sciences and Humanities, UNAM, which will be broadcast through the Urnas Abiertas and Hora Cero Facebook page.
Academics and defenders from other countries in the region will also participate in the panel, such as Alberto Cortés, from Costa Rica, Carolina Jiménez, Claudia Paz y Paz, from Guatemala; Jose Marinero, from El Salvador.
The Government of Nicaragua was excluded from the Summit of the Americas, which is designated as a dictatorship and violator of human rights, however Daniel Ortega has minimized the event and has said that he has no interest in participating in the meeting.
