you still have time to and, thus, make your electoral day more comfortable in the 2022 Regional and Municipal Elections. To avoid setbacks in transfers and speed up the elections, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) decided to extend the term to choose the voting center. Do you know when the extension expires? We will answer this and other questions in this note.

MORE INFORMATION: The date on which you will be able to find out what your polling place will be, if you chose it online

The deputy manager of electoral investigation of the ONPE, José Carlos Urbina, indicated to this medium that more than 3.4 million citizens, until the afternoon of June 3, had already chosen their polling place.

The official, in this sense, asked the youngest to be able to help their relatives, older adults, to be able to choose their polling place and indicate if they have limitations so that they do not have setbacks on the electoral day of next October 2. In addition, he made some precisions and cleared up some unknowns around the platform, which we will mention in the note.

WHEN DOES THE EXTENSION TO CHOOSE MY POLLING PLACE EXPIRE?

After the deadline has expired, you will no longer be able to choose where to vote because you must publish the electoral register. The initial deadline was June 3.

Can I change my address when I go to choose my polling place?

No. The ONPE platform It is used so that you can choose where to vote, but not to make a change of address. “Many people believe that the platform is used to change their address, but that procedure is done through Reniec”, explained the deputy manager of electoral investigation of the ONPE, José Carlos Urbina, who indicated that this has been a recurring question. He clarified that people can only elect a local in the district where they live because they must elect local authorities.

In the event that you have moved to another district after October 2, 2021 or you have updated your DNI after that date, which is the closing of the electoral roll, you will have to choose a place within the district that appears on your DNI (in case you haven’t updated it) or where you lived before.

If I chose my polling place in the last election, do I have to do it again?

Yes, you must choose your polling place again. Why? The ONPE official, José Carlos Urbina, explained that the last elections were general and the President and members of Congress were elected, so people could choose another district within the region where they reside or indicate their DNI. Instead, now it is about regional and municipal elections, so you must vote only in the district in which you live or indicate the DNI, according to the list that closed in October 2021.

CAN I USE MY EMAIL TO CHOOSE A FAMILY MEMBER’S LOCAL VOTING?

Yes. If you want to help a family member choose their polling place and they don’t have an email, you can use yours. Remember that there you will get the information on where you should go to vote. There is no problem that you have used the same mail to choose your polling station.
