HAVANA, Cuba.- The political prisoner Lizandra Góngora Espinosa was transferred this Monday to the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana, known as Mazorra, where they tried to medicate her, the former husband of the activist and father of her children, Ángel Delgado, told CubaNet.
“They took her from the Guatao prison to Mazorra because they said she was crazy, there they tried to give her some pills but she refused because she didn’t know where they came from, and it could be something harmful,” Delgado told CubaNet over the phone.
That same day, Góngora Espinosa was returned to the Guatao women’s prison; Her ex-husband was able to visit her this Thursday and assured that she is in good health.
However, the information has set off alarms on social networks because “psychiatry centers have historically been used in Cuba to torture dissidents,” said Salomé García Bacallao, a member of the Justice 11J working group.
Lizandra Góngora Espinosa, 36 years old and mother of five minors, was arrested for her participation in the protests on July 11 (11J) 2021 in Güira de Melena, Artemisa province. She spent several days in a state of enforced disappearanceincommunicado.
Last April, she was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the alleged crimes of sabotage and public disorder. Her ex-partner assures that her demonstration was completely peaceful and that behind her excessive condemnation is her punishment for her opposition activism and criticism of the regime.
According to Justice 11J, at least 1,476 people were arrested after 11J in Cuba, of whom 729 remain in detention, 583 have been tried, and 175 have been accused of sedition, a crime considered political.
