“The indicator has been at similar levels since May 2021 (last 13 months), a sign that there is caution among consumers. Although the economy continues to recover, along with the labor market, this occurs at a slow,” said Gabriela Siller, director of economic-financial analysis at Banco Base.
Within the index, monthly decreases were observed in the current economic situation, compared to that of 12 months ago (-0.1 points) and in the current possibilities to buy furniture or appliances, compared to those of a year ago (-0.9 points) .
On the other hand, expectations about the country’s economic situation expected within 12 months increased by .5 points, compared to the current one.
In addition, the component corresponding to the opinion about the economic situation of the members of the household at the present time compared to what they had twelve months ago presented a monthly increase of .3 points.
In May, decreases were also observed in some complementary indicators. For example, Mexicans reported having lower current possibilities of saving any part of their income (-3.1 points, compared to April).
On the other hand, households perceived a better employment situation in the country in the next 12 months, as this indicator increased .9 points compared to the previous month.
Despite the declines within the index, consumer confidence is at its highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
