At least ten people dead and twenty missing left by Hurricane Agatha in Mexico

At least ten people dead and twenty missing left Hurricane Agatha after making landfall on Monday in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

“Right now we have around twenty missing people, most of them are in the upper area of the mountain, that is, in the mountains,” Oaxaca governor Alejandro Murat told Radio Formula.

“When Agatha made landfall, the day ended without loss of human life, but the heavy rains that occurred early Tuesday morning caused the rivers to break their banks and landslides,” he said.

Before the government had reported three dead and eight missing, but the balance has been increasing.

Murat also reported significant material damage in Oaxaca. «There are already images of the coastal area, of the tourist area. There in the mountains we have identified more than 30 damaged homes », he detailed.

He added that little by little some communication routes and the electric light service are being recovered.

Authorities had evacuated some 5,240 tourists in the impact zone, which is home to resorts like Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, popular with European and American surfers.

The meteor made landfall as a hurricane 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale on Monday afternoon west of Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca, a town of about 2,500 inhabitants.

Mexican authorities reported that Agatha’s remains will continue to cause rains for the next few hours in Oaxaca and in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz.
