The OVCS says that the presence and investigations of the United Nations and the International Criminal Court affect the rates of repression in Venezuela
According to data released by the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict (OVCS)In the first four months of 2022, 2,677 protests were registered in Venezuela, a figure that represents an increase of 28% compared to the same period in 2021, when 2,054 were counted.
According to the findings, on average there were about 22 daily protests across the country.
“During the first four months of 2022, more than 70% of all citizen demonstrations and demands were for Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (Desca),” says the observatory report.
The observatory also assured that in this computed period the rate of demonstrations carried out and organized by workers increased.
Labor rights were the main reason for the demonstrations, thus reaching a total of 1,012 protests. Figure that exceeded the requirements for basic services.
The observatory also recorded 659 demonstrations due to “basic services with regular complaints due to failures in the supply of drinking water, domestic gas and electricity. In addition, other services such as solid waste and sewage collection, mobile telephony and internet were added.
On the other hand, 519 protests were represented by political rights: at least 1,874 rallies in front of government institutions or centers; 289 closures of streets or avenues in areas where protesters drew attention and made their demands visible; and 80 gears, among others.
The OVCS also pointed out that 32 peaceful protests in 10 states of the country were suppressed or prevented, representing a decrease of 13% compared to the first four months of the same period of 2021 and adds that the presence and investigations of the United Nations and the International Criminal Court affect the rates of repression in Venezuela.

Finally, the organization recalled that in a decade they have documented 92,719 protests throughout Venezuela, whose main claim is respect for and compliance with economic and social guarantees.
According to the OVCS, in the Caribbean country there were 6,560 protests in 2021, an average of 18 daily, which represented a decrease of 32% compared to 2020, when the organization documented 9,633 protests, with an average of 26 each day.
Of the 6,560 protests that occurred in 2021, 4,853 were related to claims for economic, social, cultural and environmental rights; and 1,707 associated with civil and political rights.
