Human Rights Collective condemns the illegalization of another 83 NGOs

The Nicaraguan Never Again Human Rights Collective, based in Costa Rica, condemned the new action of the Daniel Ortega regime to cancel the legal personality of 83 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the Enrique Bolaños Foundation and the Association of the Language of Nicaragua. “According to the regime, (the action) is for not registering in accordance with the Law for the Regulation of Foreign Agents and violating the General Law for the Regulation and Control of Non-Profit Organizations and the Law against Money Laundering. He pointed out that, from 2018 to date, the Ortega-Murillo regime has canceled the legal personality of 344 organizations, through the Ministry of the Interior and the National Assembly “that execute the will of a tyranny with the purpose of exercising absolute control, persecute those who think differently and establish a single thought violating the human rights of the Nicaraguan people.

Faced with this new onslaught, the Collective’s defenders denounced “the systematic repression that the regime promotes against
organizations of civil society, whose right to freedom of association, political participation and contribution to the development of Nicaragua is violated.

“We express our solidarity with the victims and beneficiaries of the canceled organizations and demand freedom for all political prisoners, as well as the repeal of repressive laws in Nicaragua,” concluded the statement dated May 31.

The decision to “behead” these 83 non-profit organizations (NPOs) was approved with 75 votes from the deputies of the Sandinista caucus. Said initiative was presented on May 25 by the deputy faithful to Ortega, Filiberto Rodríguez, which targeted organizations for the defense of women, social, health, and culture, among others.

With this new round of outlawing, the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship already has more than 200 associations canceled so far in 2022. Ortega’s decision to cancel the NGOs has been rejected by the national and international community, cataloging it as a “persecution against freedom of association’.
