Small protests challenge the police state of the Ortega-Murillo regime

The de facto police state imposed by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo in Nicaragua was violated on May 30, 2022. Nicaraguans, clandestinely, with small actions of citizen resistance in support of the national mourning called by the mothers of the victims of the massacre of May 30, 2018.

On the outskirts of the Denis Martínez National Stadium, in Managua, a funeral wreath, adorned with flowers and white roses and a blue ribbon, was placed by members of the Blue and White National Unity (UNAB), “in memory of the murdered victims.” four years ago.

The opposition group reiterated its commitment to “search for justice, truth and no impunity” for each of the 355 people who died, according to data from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), as a result of the repression of the Ortega-Murillo regime to the social protests that began in April 2018.

For four years, in Nicaragua it has been remembered that on May 30, 2018, the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo perpetrated a massacre that left 19 people murdered while supporting the “March of the Mothers”, which took place in Managua and was replicated in the different departments of the country.

The people murdered on May 30, 2018 were: Carlos Manuel Vásquez Díaz, José Manuel Quintero, Mauricio Ramón López Toruño, Cruz Alberto Obregón López, Dodanim Castilblanco Blandón, Jairo Antonio Osorio Raudales, Dariel Steven Gutiérrez Ríos and Darwin Salcedo Vílchez.

Also Rudy Antonio Hernández Almendárez, Juan Alejandro Zepeda Ortiz, Marvin José Meléndez Núñez, Heriberto Maudiel Pérez Díaz, Kevin Antonio Coffin Reyes, Edgard Guevara Portobanco, Daniel Josías Reyes Rivera, Jonathan Morazán Meza, Francisco Javier Reyes Zapata, Maycol Cipriano González Hernández and Orlando Aguirre Córdoba.

In Granada, citizens also expressed their support for the mothers of the 19 people murdered on May 30, 2018. In some of the streets of that city, blue and white pieces of paper and posters with messages such as: “May 30, mourning national”, “May 30, justice for the victims”, “justice for all victims”, “freedom for political prisoners” and “freedom”.

Other Nicaraguans chose to build altars inside their homes. In some it was possible to see photographs of the victims murdered four years ago during the “March of the Mothers” and front pages of the printed newspapers that denounced the Ortega massacre at that time.

There were also those who placed black ribbons on the internal doors of their homes or played music alluding to the civic and peaceful resistance that was born in 2018.

A group of Nicaraguans in Mexico also showed solidarity and joined the day of national mourning called by the relatives of the victims. Through a video, they showed photos, exposed a list and named the 19 people murdered on May 30, 2018.

“Today we stand in solidarity with the mothers and relatives of all the victims of the repression carried out by the Daniel Ortega regime in these four years. From here we continue to demand justice and freedom from the people of Nicaragua”, they indicated in part of the video.
