Minister of Education condemned acts of violence in high school protests: “Our conversation is only with those who do it through dialogue”

The Minister of Education, Marco Antonio Avilaspoke this day about the acts of violence that occurred this Monday in different educational establishments in Santiago.

It should be noted that in three emblematic schools incidents were reported in the context of student protests. At the José Victorino Lastarria High School (Providencia) three officials were injured after the activation of a fire extinguisher. At the Liceo Manuel Barros Borgoño they tried to burn a Transantiago bus, while at the Barros Arana National Boarding School (INBA) a van and two motorcycles were set on fire.

Before these repetitive events of violence in each student protest, the head of the Mineduc indicated that “it is not presentable nor do we agree or accept the acts of violence. We have installed an open door management in the ministry to dialogue and talk with all and all and we have shown it”.

“We have said it in many spaces, we do not believe that the solution to the problems faced by educational establishments is in any case violence and we hope that if these are public security problems they will be dealt with accordingly, especially if they occur in the street” Avila stressed.

In addition, he added that “it is not presentable, we do not accept it, we do not agree. And also point out that the current regulations, the coexistence manual itself, allow measures to be taken if a student is discovered in a crime within the establishment, a crime that today is considered serious, for example if it is the manipulation of an (incendiary) device of any kind”.

Along these lines, the Secretary of State pointed out that “we want to be blunt about that: we do not agree, we do not believe in violence, our conversation is only with those who do so through dialogue.”

Finally, the Minister of Education specified that “last week we were on Tuesday with the INBA students in the Directorate of Education in Santiago talking with them, precisely to agree on some adjustments, therefore I am very sorry for this.”
