The Director General of Policies and Regulation in Communications of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), Marco Antonio Maldonado Gutarra, answers some questions about the numbering of mobile phones and landlines that you find very interesting.
WHY DO CELL PHONE NUMBERS HAVE NINE DIGITS?
Cell phone numbers have nine digits because the network needed to be expanded. Until the beginning of 2008, mobile phones had an 8-digit number, this is due to the number of mobile lines that existed (approximately 16 million) and no more digits were necessary. However, as the mobile service became more massive, the eight-digit numbers were exhausted. In this sense, in order to meet the numerical demand, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) had to expand to nine digits.
WHY DO CELL PHONE NUMBERS BEGIN WITH 9?
Cell phone numbers start with 9, because at the time the number of digits had to be extended to nine, the solution consisted in modifying the Fundamental Technical Numbering Plan to add the number nine (9) in front of all the numbers existing at that time. This change made it possible to expand the capacity of mobile numbers to approximately 100 million numbers.
HOW MANY NUMBERS OF CELL PHONES REMAIN TO ASSIGN?
The telephone numbers that begin with the number 9, which still remain to be assigned to mobile operators, are 9 million. This figure represents 10% of capacity number mobile numbers that were allowed to be expanded when a new digit was added in 2008. It should be noted that, currently, approximately 90% of the available mobile numbers have been assigned to operators, of which there are approximately 40 million active cell lines This is because there are users who have more than one cell phone number.
HOW DOES A CALL WORK?
When a user makes a cell phone call, they connect to the public mobile network of their operator (Movistar, Claro, Entel or Bitel) through a base station (antenna and cell tower), the stations are interconnected to the switching center that It is in charge of diverting the call to the base station where the recipient number is located, in this way communication between the interlocutors is established.
WHY DO THE HOUSEHOLD NUMBERS HAVE 7 DIGITS?
The number of digits for fixed telephony is defined in the Fundamental Technical Numbering Plan, which establishes digit ranges of 7 numbers for Lima and 6 digits for the rest of Peru. These ranges are assigned to the different fixed service operators, as requested.
IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE WITH THE LIMA AND PROVINCE NUMBERS?
In the case of fixed numbers, we can say that they are geographical because they have a national destination code in the initial part of the numbering.
