A Honduran prosecutor is shot dead in the south of the country

Karen Almendares, environmental prosecutor in the southern zone of Honduras, was riddled with bullets on Friday night in the Honduran city of Nacaome, where she lived, inform local media.

The 39-year-old woman, who, according to unofficial versions, was the sister of a high-ranking officer in the country’s Armed Forces, was attacked by unknown assailants when she was returning from a gym to her home in the El Chagüite neighborhood.

The authorities of the Police Directorate of Investigations (DPI) began the investigation to find those responsible and find out the motives for the crime.

For his part, the deputy of the Libertad y Refundación (Libre) Party, Jari Dixon, lament the death of Almendares. “My deepest condolences to her family, Karen was my assistant when I was a prosecutor, how terrible,” she said.

Almendares is the third prosecutor assassinated in Latin America in less than a month. On May 10, assassins they killed in Colombia the prosecutor against organized crime in Paraguay, Marcelo Pecci, while this week in Ecuador the traffic prosecutor of the city of Manta, Luz Marina, was assassinated
