Internet purchases with cards issued by banks grew 95% in three years.

The ABA projects that, by the end of 2021, 56 million transactions have been made via the Internet with credit, debit and prepaid cards, with a value of RD $ 50.3 billion locally and RD $ 75.5 billion internationally.

Santo Domingo.- From 2018 to 2020, the number of Internet transactions with bank cards issued by multiple banks increased by 14 million and is projected to reach 56 million transactions by the end of 2021, an increase of 95% in three years, according to estimates of the Association of Multiple Banks of the Dominican Republic (ABA).

Through a press document, the ABA reported that, as of September this year, the volume of Internet purchase transactions with non-present cards from multiple banks reached 42 million.

He explained that, during the 2018-2020 period, the number of international transactions through credit, debit and prepaid cards increased 8.6 million, to reach 28.7 million in 2020. The ABA projected that, by the end of 2021, the number of operations amounted to 38.3 million. He indicated that, at the local level, the number of these operations increased by 5.3 million between 2018 and 2020, estimating that by the end of 2021 it will reach 17.7 million.

Regarding the value traded, the entity that brings together the multiple banks that operate in the country projected a total of RD $ 125.9 billion by the end of 2021, which would imply an increase of RD $ 62.1 billion (97.5%) during the period 2018-2021.

Regarding its distribution, he pointed out that the value of transactions at the local level increased by RD $ 13.3 billion, and it is estimated that, at the end of 2021, it will reach RD $ 50.3 billion, with an increase of 283% during 2018 -2021.

He indicated that, at the international level, they involved RD $ 6 billion plus the 2018-2020 period and it is expected that, by the end of 2021, they will reach RD $ 75.5 billion.

Likewise, the ABA considered that the behavior in the volume of transactions and in the value of Internet purchases using bank cards has been positively influenced by the environment of the payment system in the Dominican Republic, which evolves in a robust, secure way and efficient in the multiple banks that operate in the country.

For its part, the ABA highlighted that, until September 2021, of local Internet transactions, according to the type of card used, 58.7% corresponded to credit cards, 41.2% to debit cards and the remaining 0.1% to cards prepaid.

The union indicated that, in the case of international transactions according to the type of card, as of September 2021, 56.1% correspond to debit cards, 43.6% to credit cards and the remaining 0.3% to prepaid ones.
