(EFE) .- The presidents of Cuba and Venezuela, Miguel Díaz-Canel and Nicolás Maduro, as well as former president Raúl Castro, participated this Thursday in the inauguration of the Fidel Castro Ruz center in Havana.
The event, not open to the international press, was the main event on the fifth anniversary of Fidel’s death.
The center, located between Calle 11 and Paseo, will be dedicated to studying and disseminating the thought and figure of the former Cuban leader. The building, open to the public from this Friday, will organize conferences, workshops and meetings and has nine exhibition rooms, a library, meeting rooms and an amphitheater.
The Center aspires to be “the face” of Castro’s public information, assured the head of the Directorate for Preservation of the Heritage of the Palace of the Revolution, Alberto Albariño Atienzar, in statements collected by Cuban Radio.
Castro, born on August 13, 1926 in Birán, died on November 25, 2016, at the age of 90, after ruling the country for almost half a century and becoming one of the most controversial political figures of the 20th century.
His death came a decade after handing over power to his brother Raúl due to a serious intestinal disease. His remains rest in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
