One year in prison for Chilavert for defaming the president of Conmebol

a judge in Paraguay sentenced this Wednesday the exporter and presidential candidate Jose Luis Chilavert to one year in prison, with suspension of the execution of the sentence, for defaming the president of Conmebol, Alexander Dominguez.

In his decision, the judge Manuel Aguirrewho presided over the Sentencing Court, condemned the former captain of the Guarani team for defamation, as a “proven punishable act.”

The decision acquitted the exporter of the crimes of slander and libel included in the criminal lawsuit filed by the head of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).

For the judge, chilavert “committed the crime of defamation” between five and six months.

In this context, he said he was obliged to punish Chilavert “because he attacked the honor of a person.”

Sundayz had requested a sentence of two years in prison for his defendant and 100 million guaraníes (14,600 dollars).

Aguirre decided to impose a one-year prison sentence on Chilavert, although he suspended the sentence.

Instead, he anticipated that he will later determine “some rules of conduct” that the former player must follow.

Initially, it determined Chilavert You must sign an appearance book every three months.

It did not define whether it will prohibit the ex-goalkeeper from leaving the country, admitting that this measure can be suspended with the imposition of a “determined guarantee”.

The amount that the former goalkeeper must pay Domínguez was also not established, since the judge assured that it should be determined based on the defendant’s income.

The final sentence will be read on June 1.

The request of the president of the Conmebol It was based on expressions made by Chilavert on social networks, between September and December 2020.

Chilavert has accused Domínguez of corruption through his Twitter account and in different media in Argentina and Paraguay.

His assertions are not limited to Domínguez’s current role, but from the time he was president of the Paraguayan Football Association (APF), between 2011 and 2014.

The crimes of defamation, slander and libel are punishable in Paraguay with sentences of between three months and three years in prison.
