Insurers disagree with the recent Financial Inclusion Survey

The ENIF 2021 that was released on May 11 indicates that there were 2.5 million Mexicans who were left without insurance protection, compared to the 2018 data.

The also general director of the insurer El Águila considers that there is a possibility that at the time of conducting the survey and asking whether or not they have insurance, the people who previously had Seguro Popular answered no and that is the reason why that the survey shows negative figures in contracting insurance.

“It’s a survey, so it’s not precise data or based on people who have verified that they have insurance,” Riveroll considers.

Government authorities, such as the Ministry of Finance, attribute that this drop in the placement of insurance is because some of the Mexicans lost their jobs in the pandemic and, therefore, stopped having this benefit.

Even the head of the Insurance, Pensions and Social Security Unit of the Ministry of Finance, Héctor Santana Suárez, asked -in full celebration of the 31st AMIS Insurers Convention- that these companies innovate with the creation of more parametric insurance and microinsurance that are accessible to the entire Mexican society.

15.8% of Mexicans consider that insurance is expensive; 25.8% do not need them, and 5% do not trust insurers, according to ENIF 2021 data. Regarding this information, Riveroll ruled out that companies are not reliable but that it is a cultural issue for Mexicans.

“I believe that it is not a matter of not trusting insurance institutions, but that people tend not to want to confront a reality. I believe that these things are not really supported”, says the president of AMIS.

But the forward commitment is still financial education. AMIS is negotiating with the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores (ANTAD) a training course so that the employees of these stores understand the importance of insurance.
