the german chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was “convinced” that Russia will not win the war in ukraine and considered that President Vladimir Putin will not “dictate” peace.
“Putin must not win his war. And I am convinced: won’t win it“, said the chancellor, in a speech during the World Economic Forum in Davos, in Switzerland.
The Russian president, who launched his invasion of Ukraine more than three months ago, “has no longer achieved his strategic objectives,” he estimated, considering that “an invasion of all Ukraine” seems “further away today than at the beginning of the offensive”.
This is explained by the “impressive” resistance of the Ukrainian forces and by the reaction of the Western allies, who imposed unprecedented sanctions against Moscow and supported kyiv, including militarily.
“We don’t do anything that could cause NATO to go to war. This would mean a direct confrontation between nuclear powers”said.
But “it is about making Putin understand that he will not be able to dictate peace. Ukraine will not accept it and neither will we,” he settled.
“For me, it is clear that Putin will not seriously negotiate on peace until he realizes that he cannot break Ukraine’s resistance“, he opined.
The fighting is currently concentrated in the east of the country, where the Russian army is trying to take control of the city of Severodonetsk.
the ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, asked Wednesday for more heavy weaponry to counter Russian attacks.
Scholz made no direct reference to the criticism of his government, considered by Ukraine and other Eastern European countries to be very cautious about handing over this type of heavy weaponry, such as tanks.
“We appreciate all the efforts of the German government to find heavy weapons” to allow Ukraine to defend itself “but I don’t understand why it is so complicated,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said, also in Davos.
