Mexico's economy grows 1% driven by the services sector

However, the primary GDP, which includes agricultural, fishing, mining and livestock activities, fell 2% compared to the previous quarter.

The seasonally adjusted figure released by statistics institute Inegi was stronger than a preliminary estimate that put growth at 0.9% for the January-March period, according to Reuters.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the Mexican economy had zero growth compared to the July-September period, according to information from Inegi.

If compared in annual terms, the biggest driver of the economy was manufacturing.

Accelerates 1.8% per year

Compared to the first quarter of 2021, a year in which there were still restrictions on activities due to the pandemic, Mexico’s GDP grew 1.8%, driven by manufacturing activities, Inegi pointed out.

In annual terms, this is the fourth consecutive quarter with growth, after the GDP registered a fall of 3.9% in the first quarter of last year.

In the annual and seasonally adjusted comparison, the GDP of secondary activities grew 3.0%, that of primary activities 2.1%, and that of tertiary activities 0.9%.
