Ex-Colombian Senator Piedad Córdoba arrested in Honduras with $62,000 hidden

Piedad Córdoba accepts Petro's decision and claims not to have negotiated on his behalf

Last Wednesday, April 20, the candidate for the presidency of Colombia for the so-called “Historic Pact”, Gustavo Petro, requested Senator Piedad Córdoba on Twitter to cease her work in the campaign until she can overcome the judicial investigations in which it is linked

Former Colombian senator Piedad Córdoba is detained at an airport in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, after failing to report the amount of $62,770 in cash.

Córdoba, 67, was detained at the Palmerola International Airport, located in the central department of Comayagua, the country’s capital, founded by the Spanish, according to a brief statement from the INM.

This was announced by the director of RCN News José Manuel Acevedo, who also specified that the senator was carrying the money hidden in a suitcase and “in an RX control the currencies were identified, when she was about to take a flight to Panama City ”. The Colombian congresswoman would have entered Honduras on Saturday, May 21.

The money allegedly “belongs to an (unidentified) Colombian businessman who resides in the city of Tegucigalpa (capital of Honduras), who is being summoned by the Honduran State Prosecutor’s Office to give his statement and to follow the corresponding legal procedure. », indicated the INM.

Córdoba and the insured currencies were made available to the Public Ministry, where the corresponding investigations will be followed up.

The senator arrived in Honduras last Friday, where she allegedly met with government authorities headed by Xiomara Castro, leader of the ruling party Libertad y Refundación (Libre, left).

Córdoba, who had already been a senator between 1994 and 2010, has been in the eye of the hurricane after an investigation by Noticias Caracol revealed in February a statement to the Prosecutor’s Office by Andrés Vásquez, former adviser to the congresswoman-elect, who He assured that about 15 years ago the policy “would have politically capitalized on the delivery of hostages to the point of delaying the release of Íngrid Betancourt and the three US contractors.”

According to that version, Córdoba wanted to give credit for the release of hostages to the then Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, so that he, in turn, would “catapult” her to the Colombian Presidency.

The senator has also been accused of having links with the alleged figurehead of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Álex Saab, who is detained and with whom she would have traveled and done business, as some political sectors denounce.

Last Wednesday, April 20, the candidate for the presidency of Colombia for the so-called “Historic Pact”, Gustavo Petrorequested by Twitter Senator Piedad Córdoba to cease her work in the campaign until she can overcome the judicial investigations in which she is involved.

The processes to which Gustavo Petro refers to Piedad Córdoba are related to his alleged links with the Colombian businessman Alex Saab, currently imprisoned in the United States (USA). It must be remembered that Senator had been summoned in mid-February in the Supreme Court of Justice of his country to give his “free version” of this fact.

However, Córdoba’s defense attorneys presented a letter to the office of Judge Cristina Lombana, of the Investigation Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, in which the former parliamentarian excused herself but that she was not going to go for alleged “personal reasons.” ”.
