Bogotá would have a tax on vehicular natural gas

Bogotá is on the way to becoming the first city in Colombia to have a tax on vehicular natural gas (NGV).

(Natural gas for vehicles is gaining more ground in the public sector).

The initiative, advanced by the administration of the mayor of the capital, Claudia López, seeks to create a “Vehicle Compressed Natural Gas Pollution Tax”, and which is under the label of “Sources of financing to be included”.

According to the structure of this initiative to which Portafolio had access, it is intended to create a tax of $ 200 per cubic meter of fuel for automobiles, and whose rate is equal to about 10% of the current price.

A) Yes, the administration of the Bogotá mayor’s office intends to raise approximately $ 25.8 billion per year.

In addition, the collection structure would be similar to the surcharge for gasoline and diesel, and the impact on the public transport taxi service would be offset by an adjustment to the service rate that would recognize the increase in the value of the fuel.

(Freight transportation will begin to use vehicular natural gas).

The approach of the Capital District is to propose the tax as a national tax, that the proceeds be transferred to the metropolitan region, and that these revenues are used to finance mass public transport systems.

Likewise, these units would be excluded until December 31, 2031.
