European Parliament will discuss the Nicaraguan crisis on December 14

Nicaragua’s socio-political crisis will be discussed again in the European Parliament next December 14, as foreseen in the legislative agenda. But this will be the first time that MEPs have valued the country’s situation after disputed elections, in which President Daniel Ortega was re-elected without political competition and in the midst of a repressive escalation.

So far no details are known about the possible resolution, but at their last meeting held in October, the EU Foreign Ministers, at the request of Spain, began to study what the European response should be to the elections in Nicaragua and asked to the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, to prepare a new round of sanctions.

The European Union (EU) recently extended until October 2022 the sanctions imposed on 14 senior officials of the Ortega regime, considering them related to the deterioration of the political and social situation in Nicaragua.

This sanctions regime was imposed by the EU in October 2019 against persons and entities “responsible for violations or abuses of human rights or for the repression of civil society and the democratic opposition in Nicaragua”, as well as against those who carry out ” policies or activities that undermine democracy and the rule of law ”.

Also, last July, the European Parliament approved a resolution in which it demands the EU apply “strict sanctions” to the Ortega administration and requests the application of the democratic clause of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union.

It will also be discussed at the OAS

The Nicaraguan crisis will also be discussed next week by the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), during a virtual extraordinary session which was convened by the permanent representative of the Dominican Republic, Josué Fiallo.

The call scheduled for Monday, November 29 at 2:30 in the afternoon, Washington time, was made at the request of the delegations of Chile and Canada, “in order to carry out an immediate collective evaluation of the situation in Nicaragua of in accordance with the OAS Charter and the Inter-American Democratic Charter, ”in compliance with the resolution“ The situation in Nicaragua ”adopted on November 12 at the 51st General Assembly, held virtually.

The collective evaluation of the OAS member states on Nicaragua will be preceded by presentations by: Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; Antonia Urrejola Noguera, president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the OAS.

On November 19, Nicaragua announced its departure from the regional body, but this would be official and effective until November 2023, since the process lasts two years, so they can suspend it before the end of that period. In addition, during this period, the Government must comply with all its political and financial obligations with the regional body.
