The Nicaraguan Ministry of the Interior canceled the legal status of six non-profit organizations from Europe, the United States and Costa Rica, arguing that they lacked the registration of “foreign agents” required by law.
According to the Tuesday publication of the Official Gazette, the NGOs also did not report their financial statements, donations (origin and final beneficiary), nor did they report their boards of directors, identity and origin of the donors.
The foregoing, according to the Ministry, has “hindered the control and surveillance of the General Directorate of Registration and Control of Organizations are for Profit of the Ministry of the Interior.”
Among the canceled organizations, which are added to the more than 250 banned -including 16 of international origin- under the Daniel Ortega Administration, are: International Doctor EV (Germany), Foundation for International Cooperation Works (Spain) and the Fundación Terre Des Hommes Italy-Onlus (Italy).
In addition, Planting Hope, INC (Sowing Hope, INC) and Gettysburg-León Project, INC, both from the US, and the Costa Rican Association Live Better.
On Tuesday, it was also learned that the Nicaraguan Congress, with a majority sympathetic to Ortega, is studying a bill that seeks to strip financial and microcredit institutions that operate in the country and that were born as non-profit organizations of their legal status.
According to the president of Congress, Gustavo Porras, who was quoted by the local newspaper the pressare already working with the regulators of financial entities on the regulation.
