Three people died and 15 were injured, including four children, in a traffic accident that occurred at dawn this Tuesday in the coastal municipality of Media Luna, in the province of Granma.
As reported by the official press, two of the three fatal victims have been identified for the moment. They are Yaneisi Sosa Toledano, 33 years old, and Yusdel Rodríguez Rodríguez, 39. The third deceased is a patient who was being transferred to the city of Bayamo with a head injury, public journalist Annia Pacheco Palomares from the Radio Granma station on her social networks.
The medical authorities indicated that 16 patients were received, six in serious condition, two critical and one in a very delicate condition. One of the wounded died. At the Hermanos Cordovés Pediatric Hospital, “two children with trauma to their limbs are treated, while another infant was immediately transferred to Bayamo with a cerebral contusion,” Pacheco Palomares explained.
The accident occurred when a truck with passengers “of the GAZ-53 brand, belonging to the Vicana Abajo Cooperative and that came from Ciego de Ávila”, went off one of the sides of the road while descending a slope in the area known as La Norma, in the vicinity of Media Luna and Campechuela”, published the official media CNC TV Granma.
The injured were treated urgently at the Raúl Podio Polyclinic in Media Luna and the victims with severe injuries were transferred to the provincial hospitals Celia Sánchez Manduley, in Manzanillo, and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in Bayamo.
Just a week ago, a traffic accident between a truck with passengers that covered the Camagüey-Bayamo route and a tourist car left at least “two dead and seven injured.”
The first hypotheses quoted the official press, point out that the “truck invaded the opposite path from which the tourist car was coming.” Both vehicles caught fire after the collision.
According to official figures, the number of deaths on roads – a large part of them pedestrians and cyclists – increased by 24% in 2021, with 589.
The National Road Safety Commission has pointed out that the main causes of traffic accidents in Cuba are the driver’s inattention, failure to comply with the right of way and speeding. The poor condition of the roads and the aging vehicle fleet also have an influence. Added to this are the poor signage on the streets and the lack of lighting, as well as the lack of driver education.
