School shootings in the United States have become frequent over time. From the massacre that occurred in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School –which then-President Barack Obama set as a precedent for its 26 deaths–, to the shooting that left 14 students and a teacher dead in Texas on Tuesday, crimes in places schools have not only not ceased, but have tripled. And the problem becomes even greater when the police do not know the intention of the cases.
2021 was a record year: in the first half of the school year alone (from August 1 to December 31), 136 incidents involving the use of firearms on school grounds were recorded, according to the Everytown organization. The figure represented a growth almost four times higher than the average recorded by the country since 2013, the year in which the site began to disclose its reports.
In total, last year there were 149 firearms incidents, resulting in 32 deaths and 94 injuries, according to the group. In 34 of the cases, the police could not identify the intention of the aggressor and there were another six that were not classified.
In 2022 the panorama does not seem to have changed much. So far, Everytown has reported at least 77 shooting incidents on school grounds, which left a balance of 14 dead and 45 wounded.
In addition to the recent episode in Texas, this month highlights the attack of a man who crashed his truck into an art school in West Palm Beach (Florida), while the students were in class, and was later shot by a police officer. The incident occurred on May 13.
