MIAMI, United States. — Barbara Farrat Guillenmother of Jonathan Torres Farrat, a young protester of July 11, 2021 (11J) imprisoned since last year, denied the reports released in recent weeks by the official spokesman Humberto López about the state of Cuban prisons.
The activist’s statements come after the lawyer and Cuban television journalist published a video on social networks about his most recent tour of a prison in the Havana town of San Francisco de Paula.
“The Humberto López thing, more than a clowning, is a way of making fun of us relatives,” Farrat told CubaNet after seeing the images broadcast by the spokesman, who wanted to make the audience see that the island’s prisons, more than penitentiary centers, look like schools in the countryside that stand out for their hygiene and good conditions.
“If this hygiene really existed in all prisons, there would not be so many children with scabies, as there are in the youth prison in the West,” added the mother of the young political prisoner.
Farrat also denied the alleged existence of a program called “Educate your child” in Cuban prisons, through which young inmates can supposedly spend time with their children.
“Humberto López says that there is once a month the ‘Educate your son’. We all know that my grandson is about to turn seven months old and has never had any ‘Educate your son’ with his dad. This is mockery and disrespect on his part.”

In the images published on social networks, Humberto López also exchanges with a group of prisoners, who claim to feel comfortable in jail.
The official spokesman also shows the prison’s medical center, apparently in good condition, a reality that contrasts with multiple complaints made by political and common prisoners in the country’s provinces.
