The postal issue dedicated to Abigail Mejía

The Ministry of womenthe Dominican Postal Institute and the Central Electoral Board (JCE) put into circulation the postal issue commemorative of Abigail Mejia in the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (Codia).

Anna Emily Abigail Mejia Soliere was a writer, thinker, humanist, feminist, polyglot, museographer, normal teacher, philologist, nationalist, civilist, pioneer of the avant-garde suffrage movement and artistic photography with “Mirada de Mujer” in the Dominican Republic, and transnational reporter.

The Minister for Women, Mayra Jiménez, highlighted the interest of Abigail Mejia for the principles of fairness, equality and justice, which led her to lead patriotic rallies against the military invasion of the United States and to organize the Test Vote in 1934 where they voted 96,424 womenmarking a milestone in Dominican history.

“Abigail’s ideals for building a democratic country with the full participation of women still represent a challenge and an opportunity for us to make a qualitative leap towards real and substantive equality in the reform of electoral and party laws,” the official pointed out.

The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Román Jáquez Liranzo, expressed that this institution will spare no effort until there is 50% of women and men participating in multi-member elected positions.

Katiusca del Carmen Báez, interim director of the Dominican Postal Institute (Inposdom), highlighted: “This release is to recognize in a particular way the result of the Dominican feminist struggle that opened the door to the participation of women in decision-making in the country.”
