The United Nations Organization (UN) announced the three experts who will incorporate the mechanism to investigate the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo and to be held accountable for human rights violations in the country.
Through the official Twitter account, the international organization reported this Tuesday, May 24, that it was the president of the Human Rights Council, Federico Villegas, who assigned the three investigators.

The three experts who will work to learn about the actions that violate human rights against Nicaraguans are the criminal law investigator Jan-Michael Simonfrom Germany, the legal specialist Alexander Alvarez, From Chile; and the lawyer Angela Maria Buitrago Ruizfrom Colombia.
The news comes after the March 31 Human Rights Council of the United Nations Organization (UN) approved the creation of a mechanism made up of international and independent experts with the mandate to establish “accountability for the serious violations that have occurred since 2018 in Nicaragua.”
The resolution “Promotion and protection of human rights in Nicaragua” that orders the creation of said mechanism was approved with the favorable vote of 20 countries, seven against and 20 abstentions.
The proposal counted, as expected, with the vote against Daniel Ortega’s allied countries: Venezuela, Russia, China, Cuba, Bolivia and Eritrea. Ukraine voted in favor of adopting the mechanism for Nicaragua.

The main function of the experts who will investigate the actions of the Ortega dictatorship will be “to collect, preserve and analyze information and potential evidence; and – where possible – identify those responsible for such violations in order to support ongoing accountability efforts.”

The Mechanism for Nicaragua It would carry out “exhaustive, independent investigations with a gender and intersectional approach into the human rights violations committed since April 2018, as well as their structural causes.”
The petition has the recommendation of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Michelle Bachelet, who urges the UN Human Rights Council to consider “all measures within its reach to promote the surrender accountable for the serious violations that have occurred” in the country since the civic rebellion.
The creation of this Mechanism is a petition headed by Colectivo 46/2, a group of 22 national and international human rights organizations that since last year have made visible that the Nicaraguan State has not complied with any of the recommendations of Resolution 46/ two.
Although the international community continues to condemn the repressive actions of the Nicaraguan government, police and paramilitary repression has increased. Currently the aggression has been unleashed against religious leaders of the Catholic Church.
