During the mandate of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 33 members of the Mexican Army have been assassinated, according to the head of the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) Luis Cresencio Sandoval.
At yesterday’s conference, General Sandoval presented a report on the number of soldiers who lost their lives while performing public security tasks, where he specified that in 2019 11 soldiers were killed; in 2020, six; in 2021 he added 13 and so far in 2022 there are three deaths.
Between 2013 and 2018, during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto (EPN), it was indicated that 99 elements were assassinated, while between 2007 and 2012, during the administration of Felipe Calderón Hinojosa (FCH), 174 elements were killed.
In general, from 2007 to yesterday, May 23, 2022, 306 soldiers have been killed in clashes.
It was also reported that in the FCH period there were 1,046 elements injured in clashes with civilians, of which 761 were reinstated to service and 285 withdrawn from service due to the seriousness of the injuries.
With EPN, 531 wounded were registered, of which 385 returned to service and 146 retired; while with López Obrador there are 228 wounded, of which 220 were reinstated to service and eight retired.
Civilians killed by soldiers
The number of civilians killed at the hands of elements of the Army far exceeds the casualties of the Sedena, according to their own data.
According to the website of the Secretariat, between January and March 4, there were 31 aggressors in clashes killed by elements of the unit, while another 12 had been injured.
If the data is taken from 2007 and up to March 4, the year with the highest number of murdered aggressors was 2011, penultimate year of FCH, when a total of 1,297 cases were recorded.
For the six-year term, with Calderón they added 3,367 aggressors killed, with Peña Nieto they added 1,243, and so far under López Obrador, 622 aggressors have been murdered, that is, 50% of those registered with EPN and 18% of those recorded with FCH.
