WRNP begins its 23rd edition addressing key technological advances

The National Education and Research Network (RNP) started today (23) the 23rd edition of the RNP Workshop (WRNP 2022) which, for the third time, is 100% online. The traditional meeting between researchers, professors, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as information technology (IT) and innovation professionals, brings this year current topics such as cybersecurity, metaverse, 5G and 6G networks, artificial intelligence (AI). ) and quantum technologies, addressed by Brazilian and international experts.WRNP begins its 23rd edition addressing key technological advances

The WRNP aims to bring the public closer to the main technological advances in research and development in the area of information and communication technologies (ICT), inside and outside Brazil. The event is free and will run until tomorrow (24). Entries can be made by link. THE schedule can be accessed at site.

when talking to Brazil Agency, the director of Research, Development and Innovation at RNP, Iara Machado, highlighted that the event has been taking place since 1999, in parallel with the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC), organized annually by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) , and brings this whole community together. “As an academic network, RNP has a very strong partnership with this community,” said Iara.

During the event, there is an exchange of knowledge, in addition to listening to new ideas and proposals and signing new partnerships. “It is a very important moment of exchange, where we also have the participation of this community, telling us what they are doing”. Universities, research centers, technology parks, university hospitals participate, “in short, the entire community that uses these systems and follows technological evolution”.

The dialogue is about the future, highlighted Iara Machado. “We talk a lot about what lies ahead, new challenges. How to bring new technologies to teaching and research. This is the main objective of the event”, said the director of RNP. She assessed that the event, which deals with research, innovation and advanced internet, has the innovative spirit of a startup (emerging technology-based company).

highlights

Among the speakers is Liane Tarouco, a researcher at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and a member of the Internet Hall of Fame. Liane Tarouco was interviewed this morning (23) by Iara Machado about her professional trajectory, which followed the advances of the internet in Brazil. She has been a collaborator of RNP for many years.

“It is a partner of RNP and was part of the construction of the internet in Brazil”, explained Iara. Liane’s participation also meant a tribute paid to her by the community for her trajectory as a woman who excelled in a predominantly male environment. “The first book on computer networks was written by Liane Tarouco in Brazil. She trained more than 150 researchers”. In addition, Liane encouraged other women to enter this technological area. “She encouraged me, inspired me a lot. She is a reference for all of us of a successful career; that this possibility exists”, said Iara Machado.

Another special guest at this edition of WRNP 2022 is Walter Willinger, chief scientist at cybersecurity company Niksun and one of the world’s leading experts in artificial intelligence (AI). Willinger will speak tomorrow (24), at 9:10 am, about advances in artificial intelligence (AI) in the area of computer networks. “How can we use technology within our business”, explained the director. As Willinger operates in the private market, he will be able to tell how this area is evolving and how AI can be used on the network.

The program will also address the transformation of quantum information into market value, opportunities for the new generations of mobile networks in academic networks, how to prepare the workforce for the challenges of accelerated digital transformation and the increased risks of cyber attacks, among many others. themes.

RNP

RNP is a private, non-profit association created with the aim of providing services and operating an academic network, seeking to develop the internet and providing students and researchers with an advanced virtual space. RNP was qualified by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) as a social organization and assists the government in the implementation of public policies. “We are the Brazilian network for education and research and we provide secure and high-capacity internet, personalized services, and we promote innovation projects”, defined Iara Machado. The system includes universities, educational and cultural institutes, research agencies, teaching hospitals, parks and technology centers, benefiting 4 million Brazilian students, professors and researchers.

The Network helps bring the internet to Brazil and currently reaches all units of the Federation. It is also connected to other education and research networks in Latin America, North America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania through terrestrial and submarine fiber optic cables. RNP is maintained by the MCTI, together with the Ministries of Education (MEC), Communications (MCom), Tourism (Mtur), Health (MS) and Defense (MD), which participate in the RNP Interministerial Program (PRO-RNP) . It is also accredited by bodies such as the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), among others.

Iara Machado informed that the management contract with the MCTI provides RNP with resources that are directed towards funding research in this area, through public notices. Next July, a public notice should be launched, within the research, development and advanced services program, aimed at working groups and startups that bring innovative projects that can be developed and then transformed into services for universities. “These are ideas for us to expand our portfolio of services to offer to universities and research centers”. It is an open innovation program, within the context of education, research, digital health, and also the theme that involves the community and, mainly, the internet.
