Ship “Arcángel Miguel” capsized off the Colombian coast and left at least one survivor

The “Archangel Michael”, flying the Venezuelan flag, was in Aruba on May 20 and sailed from the island to the city of Santa Marta


The Coast Guard command of the Venezuelan Navy reported during the night of Sunday, May 22, together with the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces (INEA), search and rescue operations for a cargo ship called “Arcángel Miguel”, which capsized in the coast of Puerto Colombia -in the Guajira Peninsula.

The boat, bound for the city of Santa Marta, departed from Aruba, with seven people and so far only one survivor is known, who was identified as Juan Carlos Sánchez, according to journalist Jhonttam Petit.

Sánchez managed to reach the coast thanks to the lighthouse that was working in the port.

For its part, the INEA issued a statement to inform that actions were coordinated with the maritime authorities in Colombia to carry out joint operations that allow the rescue of more survivors.

The INEA report indicates that the Archangel Michael turned over due to a wave and that Sánchez was able to get out of the ship, but that he did not see his other companions get out of the boat while it sank to the bottom of the sea.

Aruban media report that the “Archangel Michael” was a ship that frequented the island. It indicates that the people who are currently missing are Ledy Rafael Mata, Lino Alberto Gómez Galicia, José Antonio Salazar Malvar, José Alberto Sánchez Núñez, Andry José Narváez Sánchez, and José Manuel Vizcaino Frontrado.

It indicates that Sánchez was able to reach an emergency boat and that he was helped by some fishermen in the area and a lighthouse, to reach the beach.

The “Archangel Michael” was on May 20 in Aruba and was loading merchandise.

This vessel was detained by the Venezuelan Navy Coast Guard at the end of October 2018 for allegedly smuggling rubber, food and appliances.
