MADRID, Spain.- “Cuban doctors will travel to Mexico to help the Aztec country,” said the Cuban ambassador to Mexico, Marcos Fermin Rodriguez Costaon the recent agreement established between the Ministry of Health of Mexico and the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba.

During a conference at the academic unit of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Guerrero (Uagro) for the 127th anniversary of the death of the Cuban National Hero José Martí, Rodríguez Costa pointed out that Cuban doctors will occupy the role of teachers for the benefit of both parties, while the Mexicans will go to Cuba to specialize.

“There must be the possibility for Mexican doctors to go to Cuba to specialize, as well as for Cuban doctors to come in their double capacity as teachers to be able to help train Mexican doctors, but also in a healthcare way,” he said.

As reported local mediain his conference the headline referred to the sending of Cuban doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I remember with great affection and I think that the presence of doctors during the pandemic was recognized by many Mexicans. It really was an impressive number of Cuban doctors who participated in such a beautiful and supportive task, because Cuba wants to help in that regard,” said the headline, without referring to the real conditions in which the specialists sent on mission by the regime travel.

Recent health agreement between Mexico and Havana

The most recent agreement related to the export of Caribbean doctors to Mexico was signed in early May, during the visit to the island of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

Last Friday, AMLO specified that the agreement indicates that both countries will be able to acquire medicines, vaccines and all kinds of manufactured medical equipment. As well as a technical-regulatory committee will be constituted to develop joint actions.

However, the president did not mention the terms in which the Cuban doctors will be hired, nor the salary to be received by the island’s doctors, nor the percentage that will end up in the hands of the Cuban government.

After López Obrador announced this new contract, he was accused of being an accomplice in the exploitation of Cuban doctors.

The Mexican lawyer and politician Ricardo Anaya, addressing Mexicans, said through his social networks: “Have you already realized the trick with which the government is using your tax money to finance a dictatorship, a repressive government from another country?”.

Last February, the news portal Latinus denounced that in 2021 alone, the AMLO government, through the National Council for Science and Technology of Mexico (Conacyt), paid 34 million pesos (around 1.66 million dollars) to Comercializadora de Servicios Médicos Cubanos SA, a company anonymous created in 2011 internationally accused of human trafficking and forced labor.
