Danilo to Luis: “May they have the humility to continue what is good”

The former president of the Republic, Danilo Medina, asked the current government, headed by Luis Abinader, not to take the country 20 years back, in regression of the achievements obtained during his administration.

During an act of swearing-in of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in Azua, Medina stated that he does not ask Abinader to perform miracles but humility to “continue what is good.”

“We do not ask him to perform miracles. We only ask you, please, not to make us go back, not to take us 20 years back. We ask you to have the heart and the humility to, as that PLD slogan said in 2012, to continue what is good,” the former president specified.

He recalled the projects that, in his opinion, the current president has abandoned as support for the countryside and the consequences that this has on the Dominican family economy.

“In hundreds of thousands of households, daily rations are being drastically reduced. You know it well, I don’t have to tell you. What does it matter if they give privileges to a small group of importers to fill the country with products from abroad, if that merchandise arrives at prices”, he indicated.

He said that in a period of three months the failure of the zero tariff will be verified, understanding that said measure was not intended for the benefit of the great majority.

“In three months we are going to check the effectiveness of the zero tariff. They will then realize that prices have not gone down. They will realize that this measure was not designed to help the great majority of this country.”

He maintained that, upon his departure from the Government, he sincerely wished the new president luck, but today it is inevitable for him to “see with pain and concern the path that is being taken.”

He assured that in just two years, fundamental rights, such as food, have been endangered.

“What does it matter what privileges are given to a small group of businessmen if that merchandise arrives at prices that cannot be paid,” he emphasized.
