The president of Peñarol, Ignacio Ruglio, published a letter in which he expressed his disagreement with the way the Ministry of the Interior proceeded, especially with the representatives of the Sports Violence Unit of the Montevideo Headquarters.

Ruglio denounced that in Saturday’s meeting between Peñarol and Boston River, uniformed police officers blocked the entrance of aurinegros fans who wore badges that alluded to the memory of the disappeared detainees.

“I was alerted by several relatives and members of our club regarding attitudes that I want to highlight as unnecessary, misguided and even unpleasant. On the one hand, the security watcher of the meeting informed our Security Commission about a flag hanging on the Cataldi stand with a daisy without a petal that, as is public knowledge, represents the detainees who disappeared during the military dictatorship in our country. ”, Ruglio said in the letter that could be seen in his WhatsApp status. And he added: “He did not have any offensive, political and much less violent legend, quite the opposite.”

Additionally, he claimed to have received “dozens of comments about alleged officials of the Violence in Sports Unit of the Montevideo Headquarters who, without any identification in sight, nor presenting themselves as such, prevented Peñarol fans from entering with t-shirts that contained symbols or badges with daisies without a petal”.

It was a police thing

On the part of the Peñarol Security Commission there were no problems for the fans to enter, but later they were intercepted by police officers “who held their shirts to gain access to the stands of the Champion of the Century stadium.”

“In these brief words I really want to express my annoyance at this attack on freedom of expression that nothing affects the sporting event in question and that does not have any political, offensive or discriminatory relevance, but on the contrary, curtails the rights of citizens in a private setting and without any prohibition of both national regulations and the provisions of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) in this regard”, continued Ruglio. “That is why I request a thorough analysis of what happened and that the appropriate measures be taken so that it does not happen again,” he concluded.
