The Vesty Pakos biopark will temporarily close its doors to the public and proceedings will be launched against the Mayor’s Office of La Paz for the death of animals in the municipal space, reported the general director of Biodiversity and Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environment, Omar Yumaa.
“According to our competence and given that the municipality is not taking due precautions, it is not being responsible, we are initiating a process against the Mayor’s Office for negligence and biocide. We are also requesting the temporary suspension of its operating license. Temporarily we are going to do it (close the biopark) until the investigations are carried out into what were the causes to arrive at the concrete”, Yumaa told radio Fides.
The authority assured that there were 88 animals that lost their lives in the place, and not 50 as previously reported.
“For correction, there are not 50 animals, there are 88 (dead animals) from January 1 to May 3 that are registered. We have become aware of the complaint and we have quickly been present in the park with the technicians for the review and follow-up”, said the director of protected areas.

He also reported other shortcomings such as staff, as well as reduced spaces for the species that inhabited the municipal space located in Mallasa.
“We have realized that there is a personnel deficit, little personnel. Also the installed capacity for animals is very small; there is an overpopulation of animals, which leads to the stress of the animals and the fight of them in the issue of dominance, ”he explained.
Arias: it cannot be closed. Where do we take the animals?
For his part, the mayor of La Paz, Iván Arias, ruled out the possibility of closing the biopark, because there is nowhere to move the animals that remain in the municipal space.
“It cannot be closed, where do we leave it? Where do we take hundreds of animals that are recovered?” Arias said before the announcement by the Biodiversity Directorate of the Ministry of Environment and Water.
