The former President of the Republic, Daniel Medinarequested the current government headed by President Luis Abinader to continue “what is good”, not “that works miracles” two years into his administration.
“We do not ask him to perform miracles. We only ask you, please, not to make us go back, not to take us 20 years back. We ask you to have the heart and the humility to, as that PLD slogan said in 2012, continue what is good”specified the exmandatario in an act of swearing in of more than 13 thousand young people to the ranks of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).
Medina recalled the initiatives that Abinader has supposedly abandoned, such as support for the countryside, and the disastrous consequences that this has on the family economy: “In hundreds of thousands of homes, daily rations are being drastically reduced. You know it well, I don’t have to tell you. What does it matter if they give privileges to a small group of importers to fill the country with products from abroad, if that merchandise arrives at prices that people cannot pay?
In addition, he anticipated that the measures proposed by the government will not solve the people’s problems: “In three months we are going to check the effectiveness of the zero tariff. They will then realize that prices have not gone down. They will realize that this measure was not designed to help the great majority of this country.”
He added that this is also reflected in the official statistics that show how, after eight years of combating poverty in which it was practically reduced by half, now “hardship is returning to Dominican homes.” In 2021, poverty increased 0.5% compared to 2020 and 3% compared to 2019, Medina stressed.
“They will tell us that it is a global problem, but the figures say the opposite. According to ECLAC, the projections of the number of poor people in Latin America and the Caribbean were reduced by 3 million people in the year 2021. So, why is the Dominican Republic like this? Unfortunately, it is the result of the wrong decisions of the government”, explained the president of the PLD. Later, citing Socrates, he assured that “The secret of change is not to focus all your energy on fighting the old, but on building the new,” explained the former PLD president.

Listen to people and look to the future
In his closing remarks, Medina affirmed that the open consultation that the PLD will carry out in October “must be impeccable, an example of democratic participation and transparency.” Furthermore, he urged new party members to listen to the people’s needsbring them hope and “write together a new page that fills us all with pride and brings stability”.
For her part, Yomeyry, a young member who works in finance, showed her total willingness to work in this direction and stated: “How proud I am to be a pedeista! In my house, we all have our grassroots committee, to go out and work for the party and for the country!”
Next week, the initiative Adding Stars takes a break for Mother’s Day and will continue to swear in new PLD supporters in Monseñor Nouel province on Sunday, June 4, according to the party.
