Third dose was key to the low lethality of covid in the country

Tercera dosis fue clave para la baja letalidad de covid en el país

Geneva, (EFE) .- The rapid administration of booster doses of the anticovid vaccine was essential for the lethality of the coronovirus in the Dominican Republic to be one of the lowest in the world (0.75%), affirmed this Sunday the Dominican President, Luis Abinader, before the World Health Organization (WHO).

“We moved ahead in expanding the vaccination scheme by applying the third dose, a transcendental decision that has undoubtedly been fundamental,” said Abinader in his speech on the opening day of the 75th WHO assembly, which is being held in physical format for the first time since 2019.

“The lessons of the pandemic open the opportunity for a new international pact in favor of global health governance,” added the Dominican president, who joined the WHO’s call to improve access to therapies in developing countries, vaccines and other key tools in a health crisis.

“We understand that in the context of the tragedy that shook our nations, governments were forced to prioritize their populations (…), but in this assembly we must review the criteria of solidarity and commit ourselves for the future to the right to health of all citizens of the world,” he said.

Abinader also pointed out that the Dominican Republic maintained contacts with other countries in the region “to unite our most outstanding researchers in a laboratory of the highest level that allows us to investigate and develop our own vaccines.”

The president recalled that his country registered more than 580,000 cases of covid, with 4,377 deaths and administered more than 15 million vaccines.

He also assured that “the good management of the health emergency has allowed us to recover the economy at a very high rate.”

In this sense, Abinader recalled that the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recently recognized the Dominican Republic as the first country in the world to achieve the full recovery of the tourism sector after the pandemic.

In any case, “and with almost all the restrictions relaxed, we must remain vigilant, taking care of ourselves and keeping our guard up in a changing and constantly adapting world,” said the Dominican president. EFE
