A harsh criticism of the decisions adopted by the government of President Gabriel Boric in the face of violence in the southern part of the country was made by the mayor of Valparaíso, Jorge Sharp, who also asked to rectify a strategy that was designed in order to consolidate an alliance with political parties. of the former Concertación, which in his opinion constitutes a diagnostic error since political actors who do seek to push deep and consistent transformations with the program were excluded.
In interview with The Mercurythe mayor of the port city maintained, regardless of the correlation of forces observed in Congress, that “an agenda of changes as important and profound as the one demanded by the country in social rights, security, territory, needs to be pushed by the actors who believe in these transformations, and the actors who believe in these transformations are not the leaders of the former Concertación”.
Sharp thus referred to certain “actors” who, in his opinion, “had been excluded from politics. Possibility of expansion towards other sensitivities, political and social movements that were not Approve Dignidad existed”. And he added: “I think that at the crossroads of broadening the political and social base, the Government made the decision to expand to the former Coalition, and I think that is wrong.”
“I understand that the Government may have had problems in the installation, the important thing is not to lose orientation. And the orientation should have a more clearly finished territorial strategy, where social movements, communities, citizens, have a leading role. It is not possible to promote a process of change in Chile as important as the country expects without the role of citizens ”, he added.
Jorge Sharp affirmed that “the solution to long-standing conflicts such as that between the Mapuche people-nation and the Chilean State has as its only path the establishment of a dialogue and a political solution. There are many leaders of the Mapuche people who have pointed out (before the state of exception) that this is not the way forward. I think it is a mistake that the Government is still in time to correct”.
On another plane, Sharp referred to the constant attacks received in these two months of Government, especially by an “ultra” right that has appealed to all available resources to generate a picture of greater instability, “that ultra right that it is present transversally in parties of Chile Vamos and that it is in the Republican Party”, as the mayor of Valparaíso pointed out. “It would be necessary to investigate its connection with some mass actions and direct actions that have taken place in recent weeks in Chile, regarding the blocking of routes carried out by groups of trucker leaders, because they were not all the truckers in Chile,” he said. Sharp.
“The government has to defend itself, not only using the tools of the institutional framework. In the case of the truck drivers, it was to invoke the complaints, the respective laws. He has to defend himself with the people, he has to summon the people to get involved in making decisions on the most important policies that President Boric has the mandate to carry out, ”she immediately maintained.
Likewise, Sharp was skeptical of polls that give the Rejection an edge. “It is difficult for me to think that 80 percent of those who voted Approve on October 25, now half want to vote Reject. I believe that what exists is a right fake, that what has been installed through the media, the social networks, is a campaign of discredit and profound disinformation (…) I think that the attacks that the Convention receives speak more of the physiognomy of the ultra right. It is a transversal axis that has been established since Evopoli, with Senator fake Felipe Kast to the Republican Party”, he declared.
