Ricardo Mayorga's mother dies of a heart attack

Miriam Pérez Cuadra, mother of former Nicaraguan boxing world champion Ricardo Mayorga, died at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday, May 21, due to a heart attack at the Managua Military Hospital, confirmed to Article 66 the attorney for the Carlos Mario Pena family.

Mayorga’s mother, 65, had been hospitalized for about 15 days after undergoing surgery, possibly an appendix, Peña revealed to this media outlet.

Lawyer Carlos Mario Peña, legal representative of the former Nicaraguan boxer, stated that Pérez Cuadra suffered from other diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which would have aggravated his state of health.

The candle for Mayorga’s mother will be held at the Monte de los Olivos funeral home starting at 6:00 pm this Saturday and the funeral will take place tomorrow, May 22, in a cemetery in Sábana Grande in Managua.

Attendance at the Sports Hall of Fame ceremony in doubt

Ricardo Mayorga will be inducted into the Nicaraguan Sports Hall of Fame this Saturday, May 21, in a ceremony at 5:00 pm, but his legal representative confirmed that his attendance is in doubt due to the death of his mother. Carlos Mario Peña would attend on behalf of the former boxer in his absence.

Mayorga, 48, a former world champion at 154 and 157 pounds of the World Boxing Council (WBC), was one of the most well-known and controversial boxers at the beginning of this century, in which he left a record of 32 wins, 26 of them by knockout, 12 losses and one draw.

Between 1993 and 2019, the former Nicaraguan boxer faced the best fighters of his time, from Andrews Lewis and Vernon Forrest, with whom he won his world titles, to Félix ‘Tito’ Trinidad, Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Cory Spinks, or Fernando Vargas.
