The initiative arises from the signing of an agreement signed this May 20 between the Ministry of Housing and the company UPM, which undertook to transfer 500 of the modules used during the construction of the plant once the work was completed. Minister Irene Moreira highlighted that they will be houses with one or two bedrooms that will meet quality standards and will be delivered in the first quarter of 2023.
Also participating in the activity were the Undersecretary for Housing and Territorial Planning, Tabaré Hackenbruch; the mayors of Tacuarembó, Wilson Ezquerra, and Durazno, Carmelo Vidalín; the National Director of Housing, Jorge Ceretta; the president of the National Housing Agency, Klaus Mill von Metzen; the national director of Social and Urban Integration, Florencia Arbeleche; the Vice President of Business Development at UPM, Javier Solari, and the Director of Projects at UPM, Gonzalo Giambruno.
The agreement was also signed by the mayors of Durazno and Tacuarembó, given that the housing solutions will be made available to families in both departments.
The company will cede 500 modules to the Secretary of State, which occupy an area of 25 hectares. The ministry will be in charge of the construction of the 100 houses and the municipalities will collaborate to install these structures.
Moreira pointed out the importance of seeking mechanisms to reduce the existing housing deficit. In this sense, he said that these devices will become 100 decent homes for Uruguayan families. He stressed that these homes will meet all established quality standards, will include one or two bedrooms and will be delivered during the first quarter of 2023.
Hackenbruch, meanwhile, mentioned that the Constitution of the Republic establishes that decent housing is a citizen’s right and that private contributions allow these achievements to be achieved. He added that, with this donation, the synergy of the different levels of government is seen in complementation with private activity. Likewise, he underlined the social commitment of the UPM company by donating the supplies for the construction of these houses. Presidency
