Minsa reports a "small" increase in cases and ruled out the start of a fourth wave in the country

The general director of Strategic Interventions of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Alexis Holguín, ruled out that to date a fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is already being reported in the country. He explained that to date a “small” increase in COVID-19 cases is reported in the weekly figures.

During the comprehensive health campaign in the Parque de la Unión Panamericana, in La Victoria, the official specified that this slight increase in infections is being evaluated by the Health sector. He mentioned that this situation would respond to the new variants of the omicron variant of COVID-19, and after the celebration of Holy Week and Mother’s Day.

“What has been evaluated is an increase, not in the total but in the week, although we have small increases and that is being evaluated. There are some factors that are conditioning this, for example, the new variant BA.2 and BA.2.12.1 and we have activities like Mother’s Day and Holy Weekhe pointed.

“For this reason, part of the perception of this variant is vaccination and also the search for cases. If someone has a symptom, they can go to health centers to receive care,” added Holguín.

When asked if this scenario would be a warning of the beginning of a fourth wavementioned: “The percentages of positivity are still small. A sustained number has not yet been reached”.

Along these lines, the Minsa representative recommended that people continue to comply with biosecurity measures. He recalled that the defense against the pandemic is vaccination, so he urged the population to complete their doses.

During the health campaign in La Victoria held today, Saturday 21, the population accessed different health services such as: discard tests and vaccination against COVID19, oral health, nutrition, among others.

The National Institute of Health (INS) reported that there are currently 99 lineages descending from the omicron variant of COVID-19 in the world, considered the most contagious, and that of these, 23 have been detected in Peru. Of these descendant lineages, some appear to be more transmissible than the initial versions of omicron.
