MADRID, Spain.- The Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) stated this Friday that the situation of the National Electric System (SEN) continues to be complex; although the statements do not surprise Cubans who have been suffering from long blackouts for months.
Through a release The UNE indicated that unit number 1 of the Feltón thermoelectric plant is in the start-up process.
There are still 6 faulty thermal units and planned maintenance at Feltón 2, Mariel 8 and Talla Piedra, so the effects on the electrical service will continue in the coming days, the entity said.
According to the UNE, the situation is complex due to several factors in the vulnerability of thermal blocks, among which it mentioned financial limitations and the embargo imposed by the United States government.
“At this time, of the 20 thermal blocks, we have 16 outside the capital maintenance cycle, in addition to burning a very aggressive fuel that shortens the operating cycles between maintenance and requires an intensification of the cleaning, washing and replacement of ducts that They are subject to high corrosion. This makes the system very sensitive, causing many breakdowns and working with many limitations”, he added.
According to the statement, the UNE works continuously to solve breakdowns in the shortest possible time.
However, for months Cubans have been commenting through social networks that this situation is untenable for them.
Electric System Crisis in Cuba
During the month of May, blackouts have affected Cubans and the Electric Union has reported various breakdowns throughout the island.
For example, last week in the province of Holguín they scheduled long blackouts due to breakages in the Feltón Thermoelectric Power Plant and in the Renté Thermoelectric Power Plant.
A beginning of the current month the provinces of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba also announced four-hour blackouts due to the damage.
Last April, blackouts were also frequent in Cuba. The Government stated that the interruptions were mainly due to the service exit of the Antonio Guiteras de Matanzas Thermoelectric Power Plant, the largest generator in the country.
The blackouts on the Island were among the main triggers of the anti-government demonstrations on July 11, 2021.
