The brothers Luis Enrique and Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Linares were sentenced on the afternoon of this Friday, May 20, to 36 months in prison for the crimes of conspiracy to launder money through bribes to the construction company Odebrecht.
The Martinelli Linares brothers pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder some $28 million in bribe payments, which according to James McGovern, attorney for Luis Enrique Martinelli, said payments were made under the order of former President Ricardo Martinelli Berrocal.
During the sentencing trial, Judge Raymond Dearie commented that the Martinelli brothers “are two children scared of having an excessively dominant father.”
This Friday, May 20, the prosecution presented to Judge Dearie a preliminary agreement reached with the Martinelli brothers, so that $18.8 million dollars would be confiscated.

In Panama, the Martinelli face two processes in the Odebrecht case; one of them for money laundering assured the Superior Prosecutor for International Affairs Agustín Almairo, who pointed out that in this process there is no double judgment because they are prosecuted for other crimes.

According to the sentencing document, the authorities interested in filing proceedings against the Martinellis have a period of 30 days to make their requests.
