Aerodom reported this Friday on the completion of the first phase of the repair and remodeling work carried out on the runway of the Gregorio Luperón International Airport (AIGL) in Puerto Plata.
JetBlue Flight 627 landed at AIGL at 12:28 pm from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, inaugurating the renovated runway.
Aerodomsubsidiary of Vinci Airportsindicated that United Airlines 1078 from Newark, WestJet 2506 from Toronto, American Airlines 935 from Miami, Condor 2144 from Frankfurt and Air Transat 944 from Toronto later landed.
According to the statement, the AIGL runway was closed to all air traffic for 10 days from Monday, May 9 to Friday, May 20. The work carried out, which involved an investment of more than 4.5 million dollars, consisted of the demolition of the existing concrete slabs that had to be replaced, the construction of new slabs and the adaptation of the RESA at head 26. With them, it extends the useful life of the runway, improves the operating conditions of the aircraft and corrects the leveling of slabs in the central section of the runway.
“It fills us with joy to resume our operations at the Gregorio Luperón Int. Airport, after having carried out a major repair and remodeling on the runway as part of our maintenance program. This intervention will increase operational safety by improving rolling conditions, as well as maximizing its useful life. We appreciate the support of all the authorities and our clients and related parties”, explained Carlos Rodolí Conde, director of the airport, in a press release.
The runway intervention will continue in 2023 with its second and final phase, which will also involve the closure of runway operations for 10 calendar days.
Aerodom is a Dominican company that holds the concession to operate six state airports in the country, expiring in 2030. It is responsible for the International Airports of the Americas, José Francisco Peña Gómez, in Santo Domingo; President Dr. Joaquín Balaguer, in North Santo Domingo; Gregorio Luperón, in Puerto Plata; María Montez, in Barahona, and Presidente Juan Bosch in the province of Samaná; in addition, the Arroyo Barril Aerodrome, also located in Samaná.
Since 2016, the company has been part of the French international airport group Vinci Airports.
