SANTO DOMINGO.-After the attack carried out by Haitians against agents of the General Directorate of Migration in the Juan Bosch City, in East Santo Domingo, this entity yesterday carried out an operation against undocumented immigrants, arresting 385 during a surprise intervention with the support of the National Police and military.

Since the early hours of yesterday, immigration agents, members of the Police Rapid Action Unit and the military carried out the operation, after Haitians attacked members of that organization with stones, sticks and bottles during an intervention.

The detained undocumented immigrants were transferred to the facilities of the V Centenario Racetrack, to be processed and deported to their country.

Many of the detained Haitians work in the construction of the apartment blocks, while some were residing in unfinished units.

Caveat
The Director General of Immigration, Enrique García, warned that he will not tolerate any foreigner, regardless of their nationality, in conditions of illegality, violently confronting the authorities who are fully entitled to intervene against illegality.

He reiterated that the DGM will protect national sovereignty from the scope of its responsibility and will confront vandalism by foreigners in all areas, always respecting human rights and due process for people.

García said that it is not the first time that undocumented Haitian citizens have violently confronted the Migration Control units that work in detention and repatriation operations carried out by the institution, while warning those who committed acts of vandalism that they must respond for their actions. .

The authorities also subjected the detainees to a purge to determine if any of them are among the people wanted in Haiti for criminal actions.

So far none of the detainees are on the list of people wanted by the Haitian Police. EL DÍA was also informed that there is no evidence that the leaders of the criminal gangs that are leading the wave of kidnapping and violence in Haiti have crossed over to the Dominican side, but they warned that they remain vigilant.

The day before, Haitians attacked the Migration units that went to the “Ciudad Juan Bosch” housing complex, for which they decided to withdraw.

Migration. Some 31,000 Haitians have legal residence in the Dominican Republic, according to statistics from the General Directorate of Migration.

Authorities have deported 248,778 Haitian nationals between 2017 and 2021.
Since the middle of last year, the Dominican Government has tightened its migratory measures towards Haiti due to the security crisis caused by the increase in violence and kidnappings, intensified after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

Between November 2021 and January 31 of this year, the General Directorate of Migration detained 27,977 foreigners in interdiction operations. However, the report does not specify the nationality or how many were deported.
